Sleep is important because it helps regulate your blood pressure and hormones, like insulin.  Sleep deprivation disrupts these processes.  While asleep, your body is physically and mentally preparing for the next day, repairing damaged tissues and adjusting hormones.

People who sleep less than 6 hours a night and/or don’t spend enough time in the restorative stages of sleep are at higher risk for heart attack and stroke.  A recent study done in Sweden reported that hospital admissions for heart attacks increased by about 4% during the week following the spring clock change ahead.

Sleep apnea (abnormal pauses in breathing while asleep) is a known heart hazard and can lead to sleep deprivation. There are treatment options available for people who suffer from sleep apnea. People who have sleep apnea only when sleeping on their back may benefit from a supine sleep apnea shirt. The supine sleep apnea shirt is designed to keep a person off their back while sleeping, thus reducing the occurrence of sleep apneas.  For patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, a Mandibular Advancement Device may be an option. A Mandibular Advancement Device is a custom fit mouth guard used to gradually move the jaw forward to help keep the airway open during sleep.  These treatment options and others are offered at the Sleep Institute of New England.

If you are not feeling rested during the day and your bed partner says you snore, you may have a sleep disorder that could put you at risk for further health problems.  Please call the Sleep Institute of New England for an appointment. 603-347-8810
