A new study suggests that getting six to eight hours of sleep everyday may result in a lower risk of cardiovascular disease over the long term.

Deprivation is not the only sleep pattern that can affect your health. People who sleep more than eight hours a night are more likely to have chest pain and coronary artery disease.  Sleeping less than six hours a night makes people 1.5 times more likely to have congestive heart failure.  Not sleeping enough activates the stress hormones that raise your blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar.

Trying to get eight hours of sleep daily can be challenging.  But with studies showing evidence that sleeping between six and eight hours may be beneficial to our health, we should at least give it a try.  If you are having trouble getting six to eight hours of good sleep a night, give the Sleep Institute of New England a call at 603-347-8810.
